Quoting Prices

People call everyday asking for price quotes on the various metals we buy and we are happy to give them quotes but quotes come with 2 potential issues.

1. Not everyone who calls us has a real understanding of what they have. There are many grades of copper, steel, aluminum and other metals and unless you have a very good understanding of what you're selling then we're not going to be able to give you an accurate quote. For example: what most people call #1 copper is actually copper wire. #1 copper is most commonly clean copper pipe and tubing. What people commonly call #1 copper wire is bare bright and is worth more than #1 copper.

2. Unless we tell you otherwise, quoted prices are only good for that day only. We can't control what mills and speculators are willing to pay and to prevent losses we sell-off our inventory daily. For example: in the last 3 days the copper market has dropped almost $0.40 cents per pound. If we quoted you two days ago then we'd lose money buying your copper at yesterday's prices.

So please understand that quotes on materials are usually good for 1 day only and are based on what you tell us you have.

How To Sell Catalytic Converters

We've noticed a gradual increase in the numbers of catalytic converters we buy and with that increase we've noticed more and more people are unaware of how to properly prepare converters for sale.

Cats, as they're referred to in the biz, are an unusual creature in that one cannot determine their condition (value) until you look inside. The value of a used converter can be greatly affected by the condition of the engine of the car it was installed on. Leaded gas, fuel additives and poorly tuned engines can destroy the contents of a catalytic converter so they must be examined before they can be priced. Even a new appearing converter is sometimes empty of the Platinum and other valuable metals it once contained. In order to look inside you must cut the exhaust pipes as close to the converter as possible.

Caution: If you spill the contents of the converter then it becomes nothing more than the lowest grade of scrap steel worth maybe a couple of Dollars vs. the many dollars an intact catalytic converter might bring the seller. Always carry your converters flat.

We'll be happy to buy your used converters but we cannot price them until we examine them. Prices vary greatly depending on type, aftermarket converters are worth less than OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and damaged converters-- even those with damage you might not see-- are worth less.

And finally, NC state law requires we copy your state issued ID, get thumb prints and photograph or video everyone who sells us converters. No ID = No pay.

Big copper tanks with copper tubing curling out the top have probably made their way to scrap metal buyers in the past (after all, we are in North Carolina) but to date we've yet to see one.

Besides, who can afford to buy that much copper?

How To Prevent Copper Theft

The following article was first posted on February 3rd. 2010 but a conversation with a Greensboro Police Detective reminded us that despite our best efforts, local copper theft is an epidemic.

A word to the wise: those who are watching Comex already know the price of copper is shooting towards the stars. Copper is not yet back up to the record highs of Spring 2008 but some in the industry are predicting the price will soon top the previous record prices. I don’t understand exactly why copper is rising so rapidly but I do know a new wave of copper theft and copper theft rings is beginning to build as the crooks are getting out of prison just in time to see the prices rise. So how do you protect your home or business from copper theft and what could be thousands of dollars worth of damages to your homes and businesses so the crooks can waste a few hundred dollars on illegal drugs?

For starters: nothing is the perfect solution to copper theft but thieves prefer easier targets and will often bypass the tough jobs.

Secure the foundation openings in the crawl space of your house with a good hasp and padlock. Yes, locks can be busted with a hammer but not without making a lot of noise.

Call your local fence contractor and have them build a small chain link enclosure around the outside portions of your heating and cooling system. Or, if you’re handy with simple hand tools you can buy a chain link dog enclosure and do it yourself.

Putting a big dog inside the enclosure wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

A lot of homeowners prefer to hide their HVAC units with bushes, trees and other plantings. Problem is, by hiding your HVAC equipment you are giving cover to the thieves.

You would not believe the number of business owners who store their scrap metals outside of their buildings. Maybe you haven’t room for all your scrap outside but storing scrap copper outside is insane considering the current value of copper. Would you store your Gold outside? Besides, piles of metal on the outside will inform thieves that you’re probably keeping more valuable stuff inside.

Open your eyes and take a look around. If you can see it the thieves will see it too.

For obvious reasons your local electric company or municipal board might not allow you to place a padlock on your electrical box but doing so will slow down the thieves.

Mark your stuff with an engraving tool. No, that won’t stop the thieves but it might be enough to get them convicted before they come back to rob you a second time. There are also paints that remain invisible until placed under a UV light.

It may or may not be cost effective to replace your copper plumbing with plastic but if you’re getting hit repeatedly it’s time to ruin the spoils so the thieves will go elsewhere.

If you're a business who frequently allows people from outside your business to haul away your scrap metals for the cost of the metals, take a look at who is hauling away your scrap. For some of these guys the invitation to haul scrap is an invitation to look around to see what they can steal. We know this from experience.

Electric fences can be a good deterrent but they must be marked as electric fences and can’t be placed where children might come in contact with them.

Our business has sharply reduced our metals theft since we installed our security cameras. You might want to consider the same. And the cameras help out in court as well.

Copper And Sliding Scales: Show Us The Metal

It's no secret that copper is trading at all time record highs. What appears to be a secret is the fact that the copper traded at COMEX and other world markets is pure copper ingot and there is no pure copper ingot that can be found outside of the heavily guarded warehouses where COMEX traders pay rent to store the copper they buy and sell without ever seeing it.

The other secret seems to be sliding scales. Every buyer of copper and other metals operates on some sort of sliding scale pricing system. Industrial suppliers with thousands of pounds of copper will always get higher prices per pound than the guy who sells 1 pound, 10 pounds or 300 pounds.

It's called the law of supply and demand only it's in reverse.

And it's not just recycling companies who operate in this manner. If you go to your local Ford Dealer and tell them you want to buy 1000 new Fords you'll get a much better deal than the guy who buys 10 or 100. Of course, before your local Ford Dealer quotes you that great price he says, "Show me the money."

In our business we say, "Show us the metal."

Scrap steel and Iron prices usually fall as we get closer to winter but this year, thanks to increased demand in Turkey and a weakening of the US Dollar abroad, analysts throughout the industry are expecting a rise in ferrous metals prices beginning in early November. The bad news: because of the weakening of the Dollar, prices on everything you buy are expected to go up.

Copper dropped on world markets today but we'll not be lowering our prices just yet. If the prices continues to fall then that is subject to change.

Last month saw price increases in Aluminum that have held thus far. As to what the future might bring... I still haven't got a crystal ball.

We Raised Our Copper Prices Again

Yesterday, I rewrote our price list raising prices for copper and most grades of aluminum. As it looks today, with the COMEX and London Exchanges both within 6% of their all time high for copper prices, I suspect prices will continue to rise. But as people flood the markets once again the price will eventually go down.

Last year's copper rush was spurred on by Chinese buying and stockpiling for China's Strategic Copper Reserve-- the reason(s) for this year's the rush is a little harder to pin down.

Steel Not As Bad As Expected

We're happy to say that October steel prices and prices for other ferrous metals did not fall as much as expected allowing us to pay the same prices we paid in September for most types of ferrous metals.

Meanwhile, we're waiting on the markets to open to see where we stand on copper and other non ferrous metals.

Used Pallet Disposal In Greensboro, NC.

Current North Carolina regulations ban wooden pallets from landfills. For some of our customers that's good news but many will take a hit in the wallet because of these tightened regulations.

If you're smart you'll manage your pallets better to reduce the numbers of pallets you have to get rid of. Good pallets should always be stored indoors. Pallets with one or two broken boards are easily repaired. There's still a market for used pallets but with so many more pallets being available the price is far less than it once was. Pallet Express still buys a few pallets. You could ship your pallets to landfills in other states but you deal with the cost of transportation every day and for most of you the shipping costs simply don't add up.

You could buy a wood stove for each and every employee but... Well, you know.

Here at Salvage America we do get calls from companies who are hoping to get rid of old and unneeded pallets and while we do accept pallets for grinding we don't have much fun doing it and do charge a pretty steep price for recycling your old wooden pallets.

That said, if we're buying your scrap metals then we might be able to cut you a deal on getting rid of your unwanted pallets. Tub grinders drink diesel fuel almost as fast as you can pour fuel out of a 5 gallon bucket and we all know that fuel isn't cheap but with enough metal we can offset some of the costs and reduce the amount you have to pay out. With enough scrap metal you could even come out to the good.

Finally, if you're getting rid of plastic or metal pallets we'll gladly take them at no cost to you.

Nervous Days Ahead

Like us, if you're in the business of buying scrap metals then you're probably holding your breath today. For those who may not know, recyclers' contracts with steel mills and brokers are usually only good for 1 month and with a price drop for ferrous scrap being expected world-wide we're sort of in limbo as we wait to see what this week's negotiations between thousands of buyers and sellers will bring. People we will never know in places we'll never go, influence the prices of scrap metals based on expected demand (or lack thereof) and, as in the case of the current rising copper markets, fear that the stock exchanges are about to crash.

You can expect a giant gust of exhale 'long about the end of the week.

We're sorry to inform you that because of state, county, city, and most importantly, insurance regulations, Salvage America is unable to sell to anyone who doesn't have a valid North Carolina Retail Sales Permit, state tax number or is licensed by NC DENR as a recycling company.

That means there is no reason you should be wandering about our yard, risking being run over by fork lifts, skid steer loaders, track hoes, tractor trailers or customer's vehicles.

Copper Starts Its Decline

We tried to tell you it was time to sell or get out of the way and a few even listened. Now, those who didn't listen must face the fact that copper is currently dropping in markets around the world as investors and recyclers get nervous about where the "red gold" is going to end up. Sure, copper will rise again but will you still have copper to sell?

We're also expecting the price of steel and iron to fall beginning any day now as nervous buyers and brokers scale back in anticipation of projected roll backs being offered by mills foreign and domestic.

Scrap Metals Reach High Water Mark For 2010

For starters: this post is pure speculation. But it is based on market research and the experiences of myself and some of our competitors in the scrap metals business. We believe the prices for scrap metals are the highest they will be in 2010. Here's why:

All the metal needed to produce products for Christmas 2010 have already been bought and paid for. As a matter of fact, most of the products that will be sold this holiday season have already been manufactured and are currently being loaded onto trucks, trains, ships and planes to be sent to distribution warehouses where they will be reshipped to the stores where you shop.

New housing starts aren't going to go up until next spring.

It doesn't matter what the folks in Washington and Wall Street want you to believe, the economy isn't great.

With the exception of a few southern states, new road and bridge projects won't be started until spring. Same goes for the building of commercial buildings.

Automobile sales aren't doing well and the 2011 models are already in the later production stages.

So basically, what we believe is that while prices might not go down in 2010, we really don't expect any price increases until sometime in 2011. So if you're holding in hopes that the price will increase then be prepared to hold a few months more.

September Scrap Metal Prices And Holiday Closings

Some areas of the country are reporting slight increases in the prices for scrap metals including iron, steel, junk cars, copper, brass and bronze. Here at Salvage America we're expecting to see a small price hike along about the end of next week.

Upon your next visit to Salvage America Recycling you will notice we’ve moved the weighmaster’s office to the far end of the building. We’ve done this with your safety in mind. Having customers waiting on and walking across our scales while trucks come across the scale is just plain dangerous and very inefficient. With this new arrangement we can now process more customers per day.

When you drive in from the street continue to the end of the scale only if the scale is empty and check in at the window to your right. (You know, the window closest the video camera.) Only one vehicle at a time on the scales Do Not unload passengers, metals or non metals on or before you cross the scale—ever. All that does is confuse people, slows down the process and contributes to the trash we have to pick up daily. If someone isn’t standing at the window you may ring the little bell but please DO NOT blow your horn as this building also serves as our corporate offices and we may be on the telephone discussing important business matters or instructing our wives as to how to remove the drowning baby from the drain.

Besides, have you ever spent an entire day sitting just 10 feet from idiots blowing their horns? It’s not something you want to experience.

At the window you will present your driver’s license or state issued ID and the weighmaster will record your loaded weight and instruct you as to what you need to do. You’ll get your ID back when you go to the paymaster’s window. Please pay attention and do things our way so that mistakes won’t cost you money.
Do not walk across the scales except to walk from your driver’s seat to the weighmaster’s window and back to your truck.

After you’ve unloaded you may then return to the scale with your vehicle. If you have a mixed load you will need to repeat the process for as many times as you have different metals. Sorry, there is no magic that will allow the weighmaster to determine the weights of mixed loads without multiple passes across the scale.
If you have smaller amounts of metals or precious metals you may be directed to our small scale but please weigh back out Before you go to the small scale or you won’t be paid as much as you could have been paid. Again, there is no magic that will allow the weighmaster to determine the weights of mixed loads without multiple passes across the scale.

After you have finished unloading everything and have been cleared by the weighmaster(s) you may then park your truck or car in one of the parking areas so that others aren’t blocked and walk to the paymaster’s window at the northeast end of the building. For those who don’t know north from south, the window you are looking for is located on the opposite side of the building under a small awning.

The paymaster will then total your invoice, ask questions as required by state law, have you sign the invoice, pay you and return your ID. Bye!

Steel prices have fallen for July. While the drop wasn’t as bad as we were expecting it’s still a drop just the same and will be felt by recycling centers, businesses who generate scrap steel, scrap peddlers and others who might not understand how their livelihood is affected by commodities trading. It’s a sign of the times, markets change quickly and like most of you, we’re along for the ride.

No one is certain but as prices for scrap steel and iron have already fallen in Japan, China, Russia, the Mid East and Europe, the US steel market is expected to follow suit with July price drops that might fall as much as .02 cents per pound in some parts of the country. The ocean going freighters that haul 75% of the world’s iron ore have cut their rates in half as many are idled at the ports.

Stainless steel continues its downward swing having dropped almost .40 cents in the last couple of months.

Copper dropped .15 cents per pound on world markets yesterday and continues to fall this morning. Because brass, bronze, electric motors, transformers and many other items contain copper you can expect them to follow suit. One can only speculate that crystal balls will be going up in the very near future.

How To Prepare Aluminum Cans For Recycling

Why are the buyers of aluminum cans so very particular about the cans they take in? Well, for starters, your old aluminum cans are to be made into new aluminum cans that will contain the beverages you and I drink. Contamination simply isn’t acceptable. That’s why aluminum beverage cans pay higher prices than most types of scrap aluminum and that’s why we are working to increase quality control when it comes to the aluminum cans we buy.

Crush your cans before you bring them to the recycling center. This allows you to get more cans in a single load and because we pay .05 cents per pound more for crushed cans you make more too.

If you bring your cans in plastic bags then bring them only in clear plastic bags. Also, bags within bags is unacceptable and slows down the process. If you want to be paid the highest possible prices for what you sell us then you have to bring us quality products and a bag filled with smaller bags filled with aluminum beverage cans will never be a quality product.

If you bring us bags filled with a mixture of aluminum cans and trash you will be asked to leave. You are welcome to return after you’ve removed the trash from your cans but our insurance regulations do not allow any type of cleaning of recyclables by customers while on Salvage America’s property. And we all know the world is run by lawyers and insurance companies.

What To Expect At The Recycling Center

If you’re a first time visitor to Salvage America then allow us to use this new media to explain how things work in the hopes that we might make your visit a little more enjoyable and hopefully more profitable.

The time to negotiate prices is before you unload, not after our employees have spent their time processing your commodities.

Before you come you should have already separated your various kinds of recyclables. If you expect us to separate your materials then expect to only be paid for the lowest priced commodities we buy. The following is a partial list of what we buy with the highest priced items listed first:

Copper in various grades
Brass in various grades
Aluminum in various grades
Electric motors
Lead Acid Batteries
Cast Iron
Steel
White goods (Appliances) and automobiles

Please do not park in any location that blocks entrance or egress to and from our scales. We value you as a vendor/customer but we’ve lots of other customers who also need access to our truck scales.

When you drive in you need to bring your state issue Identification Card or Drivers License to the weighmaster before you begin your transaction. This is required by North Carolina state law and we are allowed no exceptions. IDs you bought on the Internet, your employer issued ID and your passport are not acceptable. If you don’t have proper ID then you will not be paid. Sorry, we don’t make the laws.

You can pick up your ID on your way out. This allows us to get you in and out much faster than making you wait for the time it takes us to enter your ID into the system. Just don’t forget to pick up your ID before you leave.

If you have a big load (more than you feel like carrying) then drive onto the empty truck scale. If you don’t allow the vehicle in front of you to completely clear the scale before you drive on then
you’ll end up getting shorted on your weight. That’s your fault, not ours. Then walk your ID to the weighmaster and return to your car or truck. If the weighmaster hasn’t told you to pull off the scale then he or she hasn’t recorded your weight. Also, you cannot weigh in motion and expect accurate readings.

If you only have a small amount then park in the parking area and walk your license or ID to the weighmaster.

If you’re not sure where you need to go then park in the parking area and walk to the weighmaster and ask.

If you’re selling copper, cars, catalytic converters, air conditioners or air conditioning parts then you’ll be asked to give us a thumb print. Again, it’s a state law.

If you have multiple items on your truck then tell the weighmaster which item you plan to unload first and do so. Doing something different can result in your not being paid or not being paid as much as you should have been paid. Again, that’s your fault, not ours.

If you have multiple commodities (example: steel, copper and aluminum) then you’ll need to weigh in and out for each item. There’s no magic that allows the weighmaster to know how much each commodity weighs so each one will have to be weighed separately.

Listen to instructions. Most problems are caused by people who talk too much and don’t do as they’re told. If you unload your items in the wrong place then you risk not getting paid or getting paid less than you could have been paid. Why? Because we pay our employees to work and any extra work you cause them will result in overtime that we must pay them. Besides, they work really hard and deserve your cooperation.

If you unload your items in or on our driveways then we hope you’re the one who gets a flat tire and not one of our other customers. Never unload anything on our truck scale. Also, keep your items with you until they’re weighed in and become our items. We cannot and will not be responsible for anything you lose while you're here.

We run a recycling center and New Construction Waste Transfer Station and should you dump trash on our property you will pay the minimum dumping fee of $50.oo. And as others have learned before you will pay the fee. There are several landfills throughout the county who will take your trash for less than we charge—use them for your trash.

See the big wood pile? We charge you for the wood you throw off-- not the other way around.

Finally, you’re not at your local fast-food drive thru and you won’t be able to complete your transaction by sitting in your car or truck. If you’re waiting in your car then we can only assume you are either resting or dying. If it turns out to be the latter we hope we’ll call EMS before it’s too late. And if by chance you’re handicapped and need help then roll down the window and ask someone.

July Prices Expected To Drop

According to American Metals Markets polling results from recycling centers, steel mills, shredder operators and others working in various jobs in the metals industry and related industries scrap metal prices are generally expected to fall in July. From the comments in the poll results: ”Only 6.2 percent of scrap dealers and brokers in this month’s survey say they expect prices to go up in July. About one-third believe the market may go sideways, while more than 60 percent say they anticipate price drops. They believe a drop in overall demand will be responsible for the decreases.”

Historically prices tend to fall in July as summer vacations cut into the time available to buy, process and manufacture metal products.
Both buyers and sellers tended to agree we are facing a bearish (down) market.

And finally, to sum it up, my own survey comments as quoted in the survey, ”Nobody is manufacturing anything, housing is down, auto sales are poor and little effort has been put forth to build a greener, energy-efficient economy.”

Copper Reverses Trends

After a couple of weeks in what looked as if it might be a worldwide freefall for copper prices, the price of copper began a climb this morning possibly in response to the European Union’s weekend agreement to bail out the failing Greek economy.

While many don’t understand what drives metals markets and even those who understand can’t always predict, the entire world economy is now linked in such a way so that events-- natural or man-made-- anywhere in the world, be it earthquakes or someone typing a few extra zeros on a cell phone buy, can move markets up or down as quickly as radio signals and Internet connections can carry them.

The market price for copper fell $.15 cents per pound in weekend and another nickel in early trading this morning. Why? Who knows? How low will it go? No one knows. When will it go back up? When it does.

The phones will soon begin ringing off their hooks as people go to their regular buyers, discover the prices have dropped and start searching the web and the telephone books in attempts to prove to themselves that their regular buyer has suddenly started cheating them. Trust me, no one in this business cheats their regular customers.

People call all day long asking prices and that’s okay. But if you want the most for your recyclables be they steel, copper, aluminum or anything else we buy then you need to remember 2 things: Quality and volume. If you show me large volumes of quality recyclables and do it on a regular basis then you can expect higher prices for the things you sell us.

Then there’s the talkers who come in every day talking about big volumes but never really produce. Want a great price? Show me 10,000 pounds in a single day and we’ll talk great prices. And before you say it, I have customers who do just that.

The same holds true for every recycling center in the world. If you’re in the habit of hauling in contaminated products or you jump from one recycler to the other with every price change you can expect lower prices than others may be getting.

You see, successful businesses are built upon relationships and reputations. Ruin either and you’ll lose every time. Like every recycling center manager in the world, I want to do business with people I’d be willing to invite into my home. And so should you.

The price of steel is up right now but a lot of us are expecting price drops in the next 1 or 2 months. Here’s why:

It was a hard winter up North, not much moved and most of what did move, moved very slowly. Even here in the Southland snow and ice slowed shipments to steel mills and ports forcing mills to raise prices on what little they could get but now that the weather has broke no one can get enough rail cars to ship what they need to ship. A lot of what normally goes by rail is now being shipped on tractor-trailers which cost more per ton to operate than railroads. And if you don’t yet understand what I’m talking about then I’ll explain it to you like this:

In the scrap industry, shipping costs are paid by the person(s) who are shipping the product to the mill and that person just happens to be the local recycling center where you are selling your scrap metals. And because we’re having to pay more to ship our steel we’ll soon be forced to pay less for the steel we buy from you. Or, we can just close up shop and stay home.

Don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere, we just thought you’d want to stay informed.

Goldman Sachs And Scrap Metal Prices

This morning, we’re happy to report that prices for most metals appear to be holding firm or rising slightly with today’s wholesale prices for copper, catalytic converters, aluminum, steel and brass standing at the same level they were one week ago despite slight dips earlier in the week.

Why the dips? Could it be because of nervous speculators concerned with the rumor that Goldman Sachs, a major player in Greece’s failed economy, has pulled its money from Greece and gone on to reinvest that same money in the scrap metals and mining stocks? We can’t pretend to know the answers but we will be watching the metals markets very closely.

Aluminum Prices Rising Slowly

We understand that sellers are hoping for huge increases in the prices of the scrap metals they sell but reality is: slowly increasing prices make us all better off in the long run. When prices quickly rise they are quicker to fall. You know, like gravity. Thankfully, aluminum prices are slowly rising making the white metal a good long term investment.

What Happens When We Make Mistakes?

Everyone makes mistakes and here at Salvage America we do our best to resolve our mistakes. Say, for example, we under pay a customer/vendor, do we stick it in our pockets and keep quiet? No, not at all.

When entering transactions into our computer we immediately notice any mistakes we might have made. If the mistake was in the customer’s favor we eat it and yell and scream about how dumb we feel. If the mistake resulted in shorting our customers we do the following:

*Call the telephone number you gave us and try to get you to come back for the rest of your money. Sadly, some people give us bad telephone numbers.
*We mail a check and a letter of apology to your address. Sadly, the checks are sometimes returned as the address you gave us was no good.
*As a last resort, we write your name and the date on an envelope, put your money in the envelope and wait until we see you again.
*And finally, if we cannot pay you what we owe you after 6 months we put the money back into our cash drawer and drive our accountant crazy.

North Carolina Laws For Sellers Of Scrap Metals

This morning we explain the law so that you know what you must do before you sell your scrap metals and junk cars to Salvage America or any other licensed recycling company doing business in North Carolina. These laws apply no matter if you’re a scrap peddler, contractor or homeowner.

You will need to bring a State or federally issued Identification card or driver’s license. You may not use credit cards, social security cards, debit cards, employer issued ID cards or any ID you bought online. And you cannot transact business using someone else’s name, business name or ID. (If you operate a licensed business and need to send employees to the recycling center on behalf of your business then please call first so that we can make the process easier for your business.)

If you’re selling copper, catalytic converters, HVAC (Air Conditioning) parts or junk cars you will be asked for your fingerprint and/or thumbprint.

Any junk car that is less than 10 years old requires a state issued title to be given to the buyer (recycler/recycling center/junk yard) before you will be paid for the car. Cars older than 10 years old may be junked without a title.

All payments for cars must be made by check.

All payments of $100.oo or more must be made by check.

NC State Law Forbids The Buying Of:
*Any regulated metal marked with the initials or other identification of a telephone, cable, electric, water, or other public utility, or any brewer.
*Any utility access cover.
*Any street light pole or fixture.
*Any road or bridge guard rail.
*Any highway or street sign.
*Any water meter cover.
*Any metal beer keg, including any made of stainless steel that is clearly marked as being property of the beer manufacturer.
*Any traffic directional or control sign.
*Any traffic light signal.
*Any regulated metal marked with the name of a government entity.
*Any property owned by a railroad and marked and otherwise identified as such.
* Any historical marker or any grave marker or burial vase.
It is against Federal Laws to dump the following onto the grounds of any scrap metal dealer or recycling center:
*Leaking lead-acid batteries.
*Tanks, barrels, drums, cans, bottles or other containers filled or partially filled with, gasoline, oils, automotive fluids, Freon or other refrigerants, CFCs, HCFCs, Hydrogen, Mercury, Propane, Natural gas, Kerosene, Diesel fuel, home heating oil or any other chemical known to be hazardous to people, pets or the environment.
*Anything that is radioactive or may contain traces of radioactive isotopes.
*Appliances that use Freon or other refrigerants must be evacuated before bringing them to the recycling center.

In Addition To:
Salvage America is not licensed for and therefore cannot accept televisions, computer monitors, video screens and certain other types of electronics waste.

Can I get paid for recycling things I’m throwing away?

Yes.

How much?

The price varies by commodity and the strength of the market.

Why don’t you publish prices on your website?

See the answer above. In the current market prices are changing so rapidly there simply isn’t time to keep an online price list current.

Why don’t you pay the same price as (insert competitor here?)

For starters that would be price fixing—something that is highly illegal. Secondly, costs vary between contracts and the cost of doing business will be higher or lower between competing companies.

Will prices be going up or down?

If we knew that we’d be filthy rich.

Are there laws concerning recycling in North Carolina?

There sure are and you can find them by clicking on NC Recycling Laws.

Is scrap metal the only thing you buy?

Do you accept plastics?

Yes, we do accept some plastics but only in very large, tractor-trailer volumes. We are currently unable to buy plastics.

Do you recycle cork?

No, but we do collect cork for Smart Cork Recycling.

Will you act as a collection center for products you don't currently recycle?

Depends... Call 336 272 3820 and we'll talk. We love to work with other recyclers so who knows.

Do you accept wood waste?

As Salvage America is also a licensed C&D (Construction and Demolition) recycler we are able to accept unpainted and untreated wood, brick, concrete, and other construction related recyclables but please call 336 272 3820 before you load and haul your C&D wastes to us as certain conditions apply.

False Alarm

A few days ago we wrote that steel prices were falling. Turns out we were wrong and February steel prices will remain the same as January. As to what March will bring we don’t know but by summer we expect prices to rise.

We’re crossing our fingers.

Scrap Copper Takes A Dive

Refined copper prices have been falling for the last week and it’s looking like Comex will close with copper being lower than when the market opened this morning. And as the price of refined copper falls, so does the price of scrap copper.

We have no idea as to when the price for scrap copper will begin to rise but if history has taught us anything prices usually rise more slowly than they fall. Maybe it’s gravity?

Just a note to let you know that Salvage America incorporated is now committed to being a drop off location for Greensboro’s only cork recycling company, Smart Cork Recycling. Sadly, the market for recycled cork is still quite small and unable to support payments to those persons who bring their organic cork and man-made cork to Smart Cork for recycling but with if people will get behind it the day will come when the recycling of cork becomes profitable for all.

We also accept rechargeable and non rechargeable batteries of all types and CDs, and DVDs in any condition.

Word throughout the scrap metal industry is that we are now getting hit with a double whammy as copper and steel prices are falling across the US and the world. How far is anyone’s guess but our advice is to sell now or be prepared to wait for what might be as long as several months.

At Salvage America we are happy to buy your scrap metals but we don’t want the liquids they may contain. All tanks, vessels, buckets, hot water heaters, oil tanks, containers, transmissions, torque converters, engines, radiators, appliances and any other liquid filled items must be drained before you bring them to Salvage America, otherwise you will not be paid for the materials you bring to us.

After all, why should we pay you to risk getting fined tens of thousands of dollars by the State and Federal governments?

Haitian Earthquake’s Effect On World Steel Prices

While the earthquakes that toppled much of the island nation of Haiti will require a lot of steel to rebuild, one has to wonder if it will be enough to influence world markets in the long term. Because Haiti’s economic situation was bad even in the best of times, very little steel was used in construction. And because Haiti’s economic situation is now worse than it was there probably won’t be enough steel used in reconstruction to make Haiti’s homes safer or generate any real upward movement in the price of steel.

That said, when the world gets a look at the devastation brought about by the quakes, building regulators in wealthier countries might start requiring more steel and other quake resistant materials to be used in commercial and residential construction so that the next earthquake, no matter where in the world it happens to take place, isn’t quite as devastating.

Copper Takes A Dip, Steel Rises

After weeks of climbing, the price of copper started falling yesterday. We’ve yet to drop the prices we pay to our customers but we’ll be watching COMEX very closely so don’t be surprised if the prices paid by to you by us and others begin to drop.

On a good note, the price of steel is inching upward despite the fact that supply appears to be out pacing demand.

Salvage America’s 2010 Economic Forecast

“When’s metal going to go up?”

That’s a question we’re asked several times a day to which I can only add, “If I knew that I’d be rich.”

Metals are going up. Copper has more than doubled in price in the last year. Steel is almost twice the price it was a year ago. Aluminum is still dragging but it has gone up as well. Fact is: now is a good time to sell and sell we are. While we’re optimistic that scrap metal prices will continue to climb at least until the latter months of 2010 we’re still cautious because manufacturing, construction and consumer spending are still down. Holding might be our best bet but without a rebound in the manufacturing, construction and consumer markets to drive up prices at a higher rate it’s simply not worth the risk for smaller recyclers to hold on to our metals.

We believe 2010 is going to be our best year yet. No, we don’t expect the levels of revenue that came in in 2008 but we don’t have near the expenses and payroll we had in 2008. And with the recent addition of our Cat D-7, a soon to be added Dodge dump truck and more trailers (all paid for) we expect to have a good year.

We’re also planning to take on some post consumer and post industrial recyclables that we aren’t currently handling. (More on that later.) We’ve been busy cleaning up and making room for more equipment and storage and plan to rearrange the yard to make our operations more efficient and faster for our customers and vendors.

So bring us those scrap metals, we’re still buying and our money is still good.

Sorry about closing last Saturday, it wasn’t that we couldn’t get here, we were more concerned that someone might slip and fall. As for the holidays, we will be closing at Noon on Wednesday, December 23 and will reopen on Monday, December 28.
